HUDSON RIVER GEOTRAIL

ATTENTION GEOCACHERS!  Expedition101.com is creating the Hudson River Geotrail, and we need your help!

What is the Hudson River Geotrail (HRG)?

Geocaching + Trail = Geotrail!  HRG is going to be a new adventure in geocaching. Right now, it’s a work in progress.  When it’s finished, it will be a string of geocaches of varying difficulty that parallels the shorelines of the Hudson River, from Battery Park to the Adirondacks.  A network of official Geotrail ambassadors will regularly ensure that the caches are maintained to uniform standards.  Cachers will be issued Geotrail Passports, and a series of “stamping agents” along the trail will stamp passport pages when each cache is found.  Completing the trail, whether in a month, a year or a lifetime, will enable a cacher to claim membership in an elite group of outdoor enthusiasts.  A fully-stamped passport will be a symbol of pride and status.

    How will it work?

This is a work in progress, and everything is subject to change.  Here’s a general idea of how we expect it to work.  If you have any comments or suggestions, please let us know!

The Trail:  We expect the trail to eventually contain about 20 geocaches.  They will vary in difficulty from “easy” caches in flat terrain such as Battery Park or Riverside Park in Manhattan to “moderate” caches along mountain trails to “challenging” caches atop high peaks or on river islands.  Finding all of the caches will require a considerable amount of dedication.

Passports:  When the trail is fully established, anyone who registers as an HRG member will receive a Geotrail Passport.  The Passport will contain a page for each cache, containing the cache’s coordinates and some other information.  (Full details will always be available on the web).

The Caches:  Each cache will contain a logbook and a unique banner, sign or other identifying object.  Upon finding a cache, an HRG member will sign the logbook and take a photo of him/herself holding the banner.

The Stamps:  Each cache will have a nearby public establishment (such as an outdoor sports retailer) designated as its “stamping agent.”  When a member shows the photo to stamping agent, the stamping agent will affix a unique stamp to the cache’s page in the Passport, certifying that the member has actually found the cache.

The Goal:  Any member who submits a fully-stamped Passport will be identified and praised on our site and elsewhere as a true champion of New York State outdoor sports.
