HUDSON RIVER GEOTRAIL

What are the rules for caches?

Once again, we stress that this is a work in progress, and that rules may be added, removed or changed as the Geotrail takes shape.  Please feel free to send us comments about the rules.

    • Caches must be within one mile of either bank of the Hudson River.  River views are preferred, but not essential.
    • Caches must be accessible to the public without limitation year-round during daylight hours.  Parking fees are acceptable, but per-person entry fees are not.
    • Caches must be reachable without trespassing or violation of other laws.
    • Caches must be reachable without doing anything inherently dangerous.  Caches that require strenuous activity steep climbs or kayaking across a lake are acceptable.  Caches placed on the side of a cliff or at the bottom of a lake are not.
    • Caches must be located within 20 feet of a trail, shore or clearing.
    • Caches must be placed so that they will not be completely covered by a snowfall of less than three inches.
    • Caches located in easy terrain will be difficult to find, and those loacted in more difficult terrain will generally be easier to find.
