You should never start a hike without having a good map of the trails and a narrative description from someone who has hiked them before.
Maps are printed by the U.S. Government and by many local hiking groups, such as the Adirondack Trail Conference. They can be purchased online from the publishers, at some bookstores, and at specialty shops.
Hiking books are available at most large bookstores as well as specialty shops.
